What does a Photopea alternative actually offer?

Photopea is a capable, mature, free browser editor. The CMYK workflow Photopea can't do, step by step
- Open or paste in your RGB artwork, unchanged.
- Pick a separation profile — PhotoAIA defaults to GRACoL, a common US commercial-print standard; load a different profile (FOGRA for European sheetfed, or one your printer supplies) if that is what the job needs.
- Set a rendering intent — Perceptual, Relative Colorimetric, Saturation or Absolute Colorimetric — and decide whether to enable black point compensation. These are not cosmetic options: different intents genuinely change how out-of-gamut colours land.
- Turn on soft proofing with paper/media simulation and review the shift on screen before committing to anything.
- Open the Channels panel and inspect each plate — cyan, magenta, yellow, black — in isolation. This is the step that catches black text that has crept into a four-colour build, or a plate carrying more ink than intended.
- Convert to CMYK through the chosen profile once the proof and plates look right.
- Export a CMYK 8-bit TIFF with the ICC profile embedded, or a print PDF with bleed, crop marks and an ICC OutputIntent.
Why this sequence matters
None of these steps are decorative. A rendering intent changes actual pixel values at the gamut boundary. A soft proof without the right paper simulation can look fine on screen and print wrong. Per-plate inspection is the only reliable way to catch a build error before it reaches a press. Photopea's fixed SWOP preview skips profile selection, intent selection, BPC and per-plate isolation entirely — which is exactly why values can shift when a Photopea-exported file is opened somewhere else.
The honest recommendation
Keep Photopea as your general editor. Reach for PhotoAIA specifically when a file needs a genuine CMYK separation check, a soft proof, or a per-plate look before it goes to print — that is the entire case for switching, and it is a narrow one.
