Is PhotoAIA a real alternative to Photoshop?
For some people, yes. For others, no. PhotoAIA can replace Photoshop if your work is print-focused raster editing — layers, masks, CMYK separation, PSD round-trip. It cannot replace Photoshop if you need 16-bit or RAW editing, vector illustration, video, or plugins.
The honest split
Photoshop is a single application that covers photography, illustration, video and print. PhotoAIA covers one slice of that: print-focused raster editing, free, in a browser. Whether it "replaces" Photoshop depends entirely on which slice your work needs.
This page is not a feature list — it is a filter. Read the two lists below and see which one describes your actual workflow.
Who can actually switch
- You edit flattened or layered raster images — photos, composites, packaging mockups, print ads — not vector illustration.
- You need real CMYK separation for print: PhotoAIA runs LittleCMS in WebAssembly with selectable ICC profiles, four rendering intents, black point compensation, soft proofing and per-plate isolation.
- You need PSD files to move between PhotoAIA and Photoshop for review or handoff: PhotoAIA opens and writes PSD, preserving pixels, hierarchy, names, visibility, opacity, blend modes, masks and clipping in both directions, with layer effects (drop/inner shadow, outer/inner glow, colour overlay, stroke) written as editable PSD effects.
- You need TIFF for print delivery: CMYK and RGB 8-bit TIFF export, strips or tiles, LZW/Deflate/uncompressed, embedded ICC, independently validated against libtiff and UTIF.
- You want a print-ready PDF: flattened raster PDF export with bleed, crop and registration marks and an ICC OutputIntent — not PDF/X-certified (see below), but usable for many print shops.
- You work on machines where installing Photoshop is impractical — shared workstations, Chromebooks, kiosks — or want files that never leave the browser.
Who should not switch
- Photographers editing RAW files. PhotoAIA cannot open RAW at all.
- Anyone who needs 16-bit or 32-bit editing per channel. PhotoAIA edits at 8-bit; it does carry a lossless 16-bit TIFF passthrough on import and export for an untouched (or only losslessly cropped/rotated/flipped) file, but the editing itself stays 8-bit.
- Vector illustrators and anyone building logos, icons or scalable artwork. PhotoAIA has no vector drawing tools.
- Video and 3D work. PhotoAIA edits still images only.
- Anyone relying on a specific Photoshop plugin. PhotoAIA has no plugin ecosystem.
- Anyone who needs certified PDF/X output. PhotoAIA writes PDF/X-4 structure but this is not independently certified — veraPDF has no PDF/X profile to check against, and neither pdfcpu, qpdf nor Ghostscript certifies it. Certification needs Acrobat Preflight or callas pdfToolbox.
What text and adjustment layers do on the way through
- Text layers are preserved on PSD import and export but rasterized — you cannot re-edit the words after a round trip.
- Adjustment layers import as baked pixels and are omitted (with a warning) from the exported PSD layer tree. The visual effect survives in the flattened composite; the live adjustment layer itself does not.
- Smart Objects and Smart Filters work non-destructively inside PhotoAIA but rasterize on PSD export and are not reconstructed on import.

Most of a Photoshop raster workflow has a direct PhotoAIA equivalent, under the same or a very similar name. The table below maps the concepts a working Photoshop user reaches for daily to what PhotoAIA actually has, so you can check your own habits against it rather than guessing.

Files: what survives the round trip
A Photoshop-to-PhotoAIA-to-Photoshop round trip is not lossless for every layer type. Here is exactly what holds and what does not, matched to the audited PSD compatibility matrix.

What performance looks like day to day
A common worry when switching to a browser tool is responsiveness on a real document, not a small test file. PhotoAIA publishes a reproducible engine benchmark (scripts/bench.ts, median of 5 runs) on a deliberately worst-case fixture — a 4000×3000px, 12-layer document with partial alpha on every layer, so every layer blends on every pixel.
On that fixture: a 500-point brush stroke applies in 36ms (about 0.07ms per stamp — well under a frame budget), a 256×256 dirty-region recomposite takes 57ms, and saving the document as .paia takes 4.7s (opening it back takes 1.1s). Rendering is currently single-threaded plus the GPU; multi-core rendering via a worker pool is on the roadmap, not shipped, so very large documents still cost real time on save and cold composite.
A fair way to decide
If your job is print production on raster files and you want real CMYK without installing anything, try PhotoAIA against your own files before assuming Photoshop is required. If your job touches RAW, 16-bit, vector or video, PhotoAIA will not cover it and Photoshop — or Affinity, now free — is the right tool.

Questions
- Can PhotoAIA open my Photoshop PSD files?
- Yes, with limitations. Pixels, layer hierarchy, names, visibility, opacity, blend modes, masks and clipping import correctly. Text, shapes, adjustment layers, Smart Objects and layer styles import but arrive rasterized — already baked into pixels, not editable as their original layer type.
- Does PhotoAIA support 16-bit editing like Photoshop?
- No. PhotoAIA edits at 8-bit per channel. It does keep a lossless 16-bit TIFF passthrough — an untouched or only losslessly transformed imported 16-bit TIFF exports byte-exact — but any actual editing happens at 8-bit.
- Can I open RAW camera files in PhotoAIA?
- No. PhotoAIA cannot open RAW files at all. If your workflow starts from RAW, you need Photoshop, Lightroom, Affinity or another RAW-capable editor first.
- Is PhotoAIA free, unlike Photoshop?
- Yes. PhotoAIA is free with no ads and no account required. Photoshop is a subscription, typically $10–23/month. Affinity, a stronger desktop alternative with 16-bit, RAW and full CMYK, also became free in late 2025.
- Does PhotoAIA have Photoshop plugins or Generative Fill?
- No. PhotoAIA has no plugin ecosystem and no generative AI fill, upscaling or background removal built into the editor. Those remain Photoshop-only in this comparison.
