What makes an image editor "professional-grade", and does PhotoAIA qualify?
A professional image editor needs a real layer and mask model, non-destructive adjustments, colour management, and interchange with PSD, TIFF and print PDF. PhotoAIA ticks most of that checklist at 8-bit; it is missing 16-bit editing, RAW support and vector tools.
The checklist a working professional recognizes

What PhotoAIA ticks
- Layers, groups, nested groups, visibility, opacity, blend modes, group pass-through — all present and editable.
- Layer masks and clipping masks — present and editable.
- Fifteen non-destructive adjustment layers, including Curves, Levels, Selective Colour and Channel Mixer.
- The full layer-effects roster in-app, with contours, per-effect blend modes and global light. Through PSD export, drop/inner shadow, outer/inner glow, colour overlay and stroke survive as editable effects (independently verified with psd-tools); Bevel, Satin, Gradient Overlay and Pattern Overlay are baked on export rather than silently dropped.
- Smart Objects: create, edit contents, replace contents, non-destructive transforms, plus re-orderable, toggleable Smart Filters with per-filter masks.
- Real ICC colour management: LittleCMS in WebAssembly, selectable profiles, four rendering intents, black point compensation, soft proofing, per-plate isolation.
- PSD import and export, preserving pixels, hierarchy, names, visibility, opacity, blend modes, masks, clipping and resolution (the last independently verified at 300/72 PPI exact with psd-tools).
- TIFF export in RGB and CMYK 8-bit, strips or tiles, three compression choices, embedded ICC — independently validated with libtiff and UTIF. TIFF import for strips and tiles, chunky layout, common compressions and colour modes.
- Print PDF export with bleed, crop and registration marks and an ICC OutputIntent.
What it does not tick
- 16-bit or 32-bit editing per channel — the biggest gap for photography and colour-critical print work. A lossless 16-bit TIFF passthrough exists for untouched or losslessly transformed imports, but the editing engine itself is 8-bit.
- RAW file support — cannot be opened at all.
- Vector illustration and true text editing across a PSD round-trip — text and shapes are preserved but rasterized in both directions.
- Adjustment layers surviving a PSD export — they are omitted from the exported tree (the visual effect is baked into the flattened composite only).
- Certified PDF/X output — the structure is written but not independently certified by any tool checked (veraPDF has no PDF/X profile at all; pdfcpu, qpdf and Ghostscript do not certify it either).
- BigTIFF and planar TIFF import.

How the performance claim is measured
A professional-grade editor also has to stay usable on a real document, not just a demo file. PhotoAIA publishes a reproducible engine benchmark (scripts/bench.ts, median of 5 runs) against a deliberate worst case — a 4000×3000px, 12-layer document where every layer carries partial alpha, so every operation blends on every pixel. On that fixture, a 500-point brush stroke applies in 36ms and a 256×256 dirty-region recomposite takes 57ms. Saving the document takes 4.7s — the two costs still to address (a roughly 11-second cold CPU flatten and a single-threaded save path) are on the roadmap as Web-Worker offload, not silently ignored.
Verdict
PhotoAIA ticks most of the structural checklist that defines a professional editor — real layers, masks, non-destructive adjustments, colour management and file interchange. It falls short specifically on bit depth, RAW, and vector/text fidelity through PSD. Whether that gap matters depends entirely on your files.
PhotoAIA is free, has no ads, requires no account, and is in public beta — treat it as a serious but young tool, not a finished one.

- Does PhotoAIA support 16-bit editing?
- No. The editing engine is 8-bit. It keeps a lossless 16-bit TIFF passthrough for an untouched, or only losslessly cropped/rotated/flipped, imported 16-bit TIFF — but that is passthrough, not 16-bit editing.
- Do adjustment layers survive exporting to PSD?
- No, not as live adjustment layers. They are omitted from the exported layer tree, with a warning; the visual result they produced is baked into the flattened composite.
- Are PhotoAIA layer styles really editable in Photoshop after export?
- For the supported subset — drop shadow, inner shadow, outer glow, inner glow, colour overlay, stroke — yes, verified independently with psd-tools. Bevel, Satin, Gradient Overlay and Pattern Overlay are preserved visually but rasterized (baked), not editable.
- Is PhotoAIA suitable for professional print production?
- For raster, CMYK-driven print work at 8-bit, largely yes: real ICC separation, validated TIFF, print PDF with bleed and OutputIntent. For anything requiring RAW, 16-bit colour or certified PDF/X, no.
- Does PhotoAIA have Smart Objects like Photoshop?
- Yes: create, edit and replace contents, non-destructive transforms, and re-orderable, toggleable Smart Filters with per-filter masks. Smart Objects rasterize on PSD export and are not reconstructed on PSD import.
- Does PhotoAIA protect against losing unsaved work?
