Why do my colours look dull after converting to CMYK?

Because a printing press can physically reproduce far fewer saturated colours than your screen. Converting to CMYK remaps every colour into the press gamut, so vivid greens, oranges and electric blues move toward duller printable neighbours. The fix is not a magic setting: soft-proof early, adjust deliberately while still in RGB, choose the right rendering intent, and judge the result against print — not against the glowing original.

The physics, in one paragraph

A display creates colour by EMITTING light from three primaries and can drive them to intense, narrow-band saturation. A press creates colour by ink ABSORBING light from paper, and real inks are impure absorbers on imperfect white stock. The result is a gamut — the set of reproducible colours — dramatically smaller than any modern screen, especially in bright saturated regions. No software setting changes the physics; the conversion has to put every colour SOMEWHERE inside that smaller space.

What actually helps

  1. Soft-proof against the real printing condition FIRST, before any correction — see the actual damage rather than guessing.
  2. Adjust in RGB with the proof on: pull problem colours inside gamut yourself, with intent, instead of letting the conversion clip them its way.
  3. Pick the rendering intent for the image: perceptual for saturated photography, relative colorimetric with BPC for everything already near-gamut.
  4. Accept what the medium is: match the FEEL of the design within the press gamut rather than chasing screen saturation numbers.
  5. For brand-critical saturated colours, talk to the printer about a spot ink — that is what spot colours are for.

What does not help

Boosting saturation after converting pushes more colours against the gamut boundary and posterises the transitions. Converting back to RGB does not recover what clipping removed. And converting through a random online tool with an unnamed generic profile frequently makes things duller than necessary — a wrong profile clips colours the actual press could have printed.

Questions

Will my printed piece really look as dull as the soft proof?
The proof is deliberately pessimistic-looking because your screen shows it next to glowing RGB. In hand, on paper, under normal light, well-prepared CMYK work looks rich — viewers never see the RGB original.
Can I keep one exact vivid colour?
If it is inside the press gamut, relative colorimetric keeps it numerically exact. If it is outside, no intent can print it — a spot ink is the professional answer.
Is this why printers ask for CMYK files?
Partly — a file already converted with the right profile has no surprises left. Many printers equally accept RGB plus embedded profile and convert with their own settings.
