What is soft proofing and how accurate is it?

Soft proofing renders your image through the printer's ICC profile and back to your display, so the screen approximates what the press will produce — duller saturated colours, compressed shadows, warmer paper white. It is a preview of the CONVERSION, faithful to the profile's description of the press; it can only be as truthful as your display and its calibration allow, and it never replaces a contract proof for colour-critical work.

What a soft proof actually simulates

The pipeline is: document colours → destination profile (the printing condition, with your chosen rendering intent and black point compensation) → back through your display's colour space. What you see is the round trip: which colours clip, how shadows compress, how the overall contrast flattens. A good soft proof makes the DIFFERENCES visible — it is diagnostic, not decorative.

What it cannot promise

Setting up a useful soft proof

  1. Get the ICC profile for the actual printing condition from your printer — ask; good printers supply one.
  2. Choose the rendering intent you will export with (usually relative colorimetric with black point compensation).
  3. Enable the proof and compare against the unproofed view — the toggle is the tool: flip repeatedly and note what moves.
  4. Fix what the proof reveals: pull saturated colours inside gamut deliberately rather than letting the conversion clip them, and check shadow separation.
  5. Export with the SAME profile, intent and BPC setting you proofed with.

Doing this in a browser

Historically soft proofing required desktop software because it needs real ICC math, not a CSS filter. Questions

Do I need a calibrated monitor to soft proof?
For colour-critical judgements, yes — the proof is rendered through your display's profile, so an uncharacterised display adds its own unknown error on top.
Is a soft proof legally a proof?
No. Contract proofs — physical, measured prints — remain the standard for colour sign-off. A soft proof is a working tool that catches problems before you pay for proofs.
Why does my soft proof look almost identical to the original?
Either your image is already comfortably inside the destination gamut (common for muted subjects), or the proof is set to a wide destination. Try a saturated test image against an uncoated newsprint profile to see the effect clearly.
