What is bleed and how much do I need?
Bleed is the extra margin of artwork extended beyond the final trim size so that when the printed sheet is cut, small cutting variations never expose unprinted paper at the edge. The common specification is 3 mm (or 0.125 in) on every edge, with important content kept a similar safe distance INSIDE the trim. Bleed cannot be faked afterwards by scaling — the artwork itself must be designed larger than the page.
The mechanical reality
Printed products are produced on oversized sheets and cut to size in stacks. A guillotine cutting hundreds of sheets drifts by fractions of a millimetre — tolerance, not error. If your background ends exactly at the trim line, half the stack shows a hairline of white paper on one edge. Extending the background 3 mm past the trim means every sheet in the stack, wherever the blade lands within tolerance, still shows ink to the very edge.
The same tolerance argument creates the SAFE MARGIN on the inside: text or logos placed hard against the trim can be clipped by the same drift. Keeping critical content 3–5 mm inside the trim protects it.

Bleed in raster workflows
- Compute the full canvas: trim size plus bleed on every edge. An A5 flyer (148×210 mm) with 3 mm bleed is a 154×216 mm canvas — at 300 PPI, 1819×2551 px.
- Design the background and any edge-touching imagery to fill the ENTIRE canvas, including the bleed zone.
- Keep text and critical content inside the safe margin — guides at trim and safe lines make this mechanical.
- Export at full canvas size; the printer imposes trim marks from your stated trim size. Never scale a trim-sized image up to "add" bleed — that resamples the whole design and moves the layout.
The unfixable mistake
Bleed added after the fact is the most common prepress rejection. Scaling the artwork up crops the composition and shifts the safe margin; mirroring or smearing edge pixels outward works only for flat or abstract edges and looks wrong on anything else. The honest fix is returning to the layered master and extending the design — which is why the canvas should be built at bleed size from the first day.

Questions
- My design has a white background — do I still need bleed?
- Formally the problem disappears (white artwork, white paper), but most printers still request the bleed-sized canvas so their imposition is uniform. Supply it; it costs nothing.
- Is bleed the same as the safe margin?
- No — they are the two directions of the same tolerance. Bleed protects the OUTSIDE edge (no white slivers); the safe margin protects content INSIDE (nothing important clipped).
